We offer language classes for students aged 4+, and mostly follow the curriculum from MeiZhou Chinese Text books. This series of teaching material is designed for children growing up in North America.
Chinese as a Heritage Language (CHL) - For children with some Chinese language background. Starting in K1 level, students learn phonetics (Zhu Yin), then begin learning characters in Level 1. Learners are introduced to 110-145 new characters each level. At higher levels, class content shifts towards more "practical" applications. For motivated high school students, they can customize their learning to support completion of AP Chinese Language and Culture exams.
Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) - For children with no or very little Chinese language background. Students use Pin Yin to learn and understand sounds. Conversation skills are practiced. Aim to learn 50 new characters each year.
Adult Conversation Beginner - This class can be customized to student interests. Emphasis on basic speaking, listening, pronounciation and recognition of Chinese characters. Aim to learn 40 new characters each year.
Students will occasionally gather for large group activities to learn about important aspects of Chinese culture and major holidays. While activities may differ year to year, they have included:
Calligraphy
Chinese knot-tying
Traditional games
Mid-Autumn Festival stories
Lunar New year with community meal
